This drama is not like any other drama. Even though we have the main couple here who know each other from childhood and fall in love. Drama is noy entirely built around the love story of the main characters. The main theme of the drama is the brain, brain of many characters including the leads. All of them have a ceratin problems and does not allow its owner to perfectly fit into the society. This is a new and interesting approach to drama that worked not only for me 😇 I love how they showed how other people and the environment can shape us. That everyone has their good and bad moments and that some are not affected by situations around us, while for others they are destructive.
To be honest, I wasn't sure whether to start watching It's ok not to be ok. Not because of the negative comments - because there were none, but because the subject of mental stability was not always something for me. I saw a few snippets of the series on the Internet and thought why not give it a try because it seems to be good. One of the best decisions I made because It's ok not to be ok happened to be now my top10 drama!
Synopsis:
Moon Gang Tae (Kim Soo-Hyun) is a community health worker at a psychiatric ward. He is charming, smart, has a high emotional inteligence, patience and stamina. Gang Tae doesn't only use these qualities at work but also in his house-life. His brother has the syndrome and needs care from birth. For his illness, he is very independent (which is fantastic to watch) but still behaves more like a 12-year-old kid than a 30-year-old man. Meanwhile, Ko Moon Young (Seo Ye-Ji) is a very popular children's book writer who sucks in social interactions. She is daughter of wealthy family who collapsed and left her with a big invisible scar.
Both main characters suffer internally from the imprints that family and society have left on them. Gang Tae has been trying all his life and above all to protect his brother from the world as his mother was always telling him. While Moon Young suffers from an antisocial personality disorder that makes her seem to be highly selfish, arrogant and rude beyond limits 😅
These two try to heal each other by interacting positively with each other. At the same time, they learn from others how to deal with their inner demons. The two don't know what the love is. They fell in love at one point but none of them know how to deal with it.
When it comes to the story, I totally adore it 😍 It's unique, refreshing, new and brilliant. The way how the fairy tales fit, the references to the real world and all that and it's all combined with a slowly developing romance is amazing 👌 The plot couldn't be better and the finale was the most satisfying endings I've ever seen. Quoting one of the reviewers from MDL: "The title itself is such a meaningful and powerful phrase." The plot of It's okey not to be okey consists of a perfect balance between the problems of the patients of the mental health institution, their recovery and the sweet moments between the main characters.
Moving on to the acting 💙 The main characters are so perfect in this show that I can't imagine other actors in this role. Both Kim Soo-Hyun and Seo Ye-Ji did a great job creating their characters. They have become one of my favorite characters and actors. I would like to see them in other series but at the same time I am afraid that my perfect bubble will not burst.
The withdrawal combined with Moon Gang Tae's unwanted but excessive protectiveness towards his brother, and at the same time the desire and reluctance to be with Moon Young tore not only him but also me. I could understood every of his step and choices he was pushed to. Regarding Seo Ye-Ji and her creation of Ko Moon Young.... That girl was something magnificent! The antisocialism was so real and her cute&strong clothing was just icing on the cake 💜
But the character that stole the show was Moon Sang Tae, Gang Tae brother. Already while watching the first episode, I was totally amazed by Oh Jung Seng's performance 😱😻 Before (I think) I only saw him as a backgroud characters and this role may be the one that will take him to the next level. As an mentally traumatized man, he tries to face the adversities of life and find his place. Sometimes it seems that Sang Tae knows more about life that other "more normal" characters of the show. I think he exceeded everyone's expectations.
Secondary and supporting characters were also great but none of them made better impresion on me than Sang Tae. I was shocked with the history of Moon Young mother and what role did she play in her life. I also didn't like her as much as I didn't like mother of Gang Tae. Those 2 characters couldn't get any compasion or understanding from me.
As I mentioned in the begining this show will be for long one of my favorites. It reached score of 9/10 and I see it for long on my top 10 list. Drama has trully engaging story, unique script, a couple with great chemistry, brilliant directing and an amazing cast. It isn't a typical romantic serie, it goes way deeper than that. The internal journey of Moon Young, Sang Tae and Gang Tae is maginificent. Their (but also the environment and secondary characters development) character development is the key and I love how they were changing episode by episode. The ending proofs that even though there are evil witches out there we all have a chance to find a prince and create our own happy ending.
If someone will ever say that they don't feel like watching It's Okay to Not Be Okay as this will be next lovey-dovey cheesy drama .... they cannot be more wrong. It couldn't be more different than a typical drama as it's all about healing, accept yourself as you are, learning how to deal and accept others and live a good live even it you are "not okey". This drama hits differently and it's one of few that deserve all hype and high ratings. The show from episode 1 is strong, high in quality and has thrilling storyline that doesn't disapoint at any second. Like many reviewers, I believe that this drama had a great impact on those who were struggling with life and were looking for comforting.
