I fell victim to a massive marketing attack and I don't regret it ๐ Vincenzo's drama was extremely promoted throughout the internet and by many fans of Korean dramas, and luckily it turned out to be a great production. Probably quite brutal by Korean standards, but it showed that such scenarios are not scary for them ๐
Di cosa si tratta:
Vincenzo Cassano grew up in Italy and has been working as a lawyer for the Italian mafia for years. After the death of the old boss and warnings from new head, he decides to flee t ohis country of origin - South Korea. As a result of unfortunate accidents, Vincenzo and the local lawyer Hong Cha Youn decides to bring justice to a powerful conglomerate, in his own understanding of it.
Partiamo dai personaggi. The acting throughout the series is brilliant and she alone deserves a very strong 8. Each of the characters is completely convincing and they don't step out of their roles for a second. It's a pleasure to watch such actors.
Song Joong Ki as Vincenzo was insane in every meaning of this word. Before starting this series, I was afraid of this casting because who thought of giving a role to a child-like guy? His cute face contrasts enormously with the character's being and actions but it works.... oh it works! This contrast made the Vincenzo out of an ordinary mafioso. I am in Italy often and how Korean producers have captured the stereotypical (but true) behavior of Italians in this character is praiseworthy. This is my second drama with Joong Ki and I am again more than satisfied. Does this guy have a bad role? I doubt that ๐
Jeon Yeo Been as Hong Cha Young was a bit missing. She was not exactly the female lead I was expecting. Nonetheless her acting was very good as much as her presence as in the show. But Cha Young's development was kinda off and jumping from one stage to another. There was no smooth transition just ๐ฅbum! I'm against you ๐ฅ bum! I'm going on your side. Didn't like it. Apart from boldly speaking out and a few signature moves she was quite blunt. But I take into account that it could be hard for her to overstep male lead who was intentionally more important in the story line ๐ต
Ok Taec Yeon at first as Jang Jun Woo and later as Jang Han Seok, has created THE BEST VILLAIN OF OUR TIMES. This statement went all over the world and I don't know if there is anyone who doesn't agree with it. To create such an amazing villain not only the script has to be excelent but the acting must be splendid. Taec Yeon had is and used it to its highest peaks! ๐ I honestly love and hate him at the same time. It hardly ever happens to me to have such a strong feelings towards fictional (evil) characters but I bring no shame in it ๐๐ He displays controlled and uncontrolled rage in a devilish way that blows all specators' minds. Joong Ki is fantastic in his character but what Taec Yeon did is unbelievable. He is the one that brought this drama to 7,5/10 points.
Kim Yeo Jin as Choi Myung Hee was on the other hand, a typical evil character that you despise from the very beginning, hate in every single episode and watch the drama just to see her bad end ๐ Nothing more and nothing less to be said about this character.
Jo Han Chul as Han Seung Hyuk is a character who does whatever it takes to get the money (or equivalent) and hurt as few or as many as needed to achieve it. It is a bit like a flag and will go where the wind takes it and who will pay more. I couldn't help it but feelt bad for this character and couldn't hate him like the lady above. I don't know where it came from, but I only wished him to go to prison and be converted, not to die an ignominious death like you know who ๐
Kwak Dong Yeon as Jang Han Seo so the one who deceived many and changed dramatically over the course of these 16 episodes. Although he played the villain for probably more than half of the series, he changed my opinion of him very quickly ๐ It was a brilliant move by the producers to bring his story to life gradually and combine it with the emergence of the real villain from the shadows, and it was brilliantly acted out by the actors. **** SPOILER ALERT **** I was pretty sad when both Cha Yong's dad and Han Seo were sacrified for drama development **** SPOILER ALERT **** Han Seo had the best written character development and I wish Cha Yong's would be in at least 70% as good because it was hurtfully lacking.
La storia. Drama had a very strong cast that brought it to the top, but the script itself wasn't fantastic. The story presented was quite trivial and many minor elements could be predicted. The humorous scenes introduced were very enjoyable and balanced well with the brutal ending. Vincenzo was very lucky many times, which allowed him to win ๐ชVINCERO! But situations like help of pigeons or a coincidental ex-athletes as inhabitants of the Geumga Plaza were a too farfetch. I was a bit disturbed by the Disney-like surrealism of the story and the fact that the "good side" was always doing well, everyone who joined them was an expert in their field and ideally who the leads were looking for. But in the same time anyone on the villain's side seems not to have no brains or at least very few, being irrational most of the time neither couldn't prepare anything reasonable to fight back with. You don't see it while watching, just later on it starts to pop up in your head and bugs you ๐
๐ That made me to lower the score to 7/10.
Many says that the drama would be better without the side romance between the leads but in my opinion it was a nice buffer to intense evil plot. It gave a moment to breath and see that there is something more in those than just the revange.
Recitazione. I already said a lot about the leads and just mentioned the side characters which are Geumga Plaza and International Crime Response Division agent Ahn Ki Seok (Im Chul Soo). They as good and convincing that covers everything. There is nothing special about their acting that I could point out. They are very likable but at the same moment can be annoying.
Musica. Although music is an important part of Italian history, it does not play an important part in the series. The content of the drama is intertwined with the character of Choi Myung Hee who likes to exercise and Vincenzo who likes the classics. The background music is good but not killing it ๐
Would I watch this series again? Maybe, but certainly not in the near future because its content is still too much in my head. It is definitely a series worth seeing but at the same time it is one of those that once you know who is bad and who is good, it stops being so exciting. Generally, I'm not a person who watches series or dramas for the second time or more (movies are something else) but this one I would give a second thought as much as my top10s.
At the end, typically - I recommend the drama.
Why?! ACTING! This is the proof that when you have a stron team even a bit lacking script can be an insanely good drama. Once you start to watch Vincenzo you won't be able to stop.
