Queen of Tears

It was one of my most anticipated dramas this year. I wasn't disappointed with it for a minute! It took me a while to write the review due to work. Queen of Tears had fantastic script, super interesting story, great characters and top of the top acting! The only problem for me was the lenghts of the episodes: 1h30 😵 way too long. When I watched both episodes on Sunday or Monday, I had to break them into shorter pieces as there was too much drama for 3h-sit 😅😆

Whose tears and who is the queen?

Baek Hyun Woo is the pride of the village of Yongduri as he is the legal director of the conglomerate Queens Group and husband of its heiress Hong Hae In. She is the cold queen of Queens Group’s department stores. Their lives could not have been more different than what people write and talk about. The couple talks about their timeless love and falling in love at first sight, but on a daily basis they live completely separate lives. One day Hyun Woo decided to finally stop it and divorce but his wife presents him with news that makes him unable to leave. While they play further the game of fake love, conglomerate faces gigantic problems.

In my opinion, the most important (and best) element in this drama are the actors and their characters. The scenario was not the most unique, it included many Korean stereotypes such as white truck of doom, love triangle, evil hidden plans, hospital gatherings, etc. but this did not allow the series to decline in quality. From the main actors to the side characters, everyone played their role brilliantly 😍 I didn't feel that certain characters were unnecessary or irritating and disrupting the content of the drama.

Kim Soo-hyun's character, Baek Hyun woo, is made of contrasts. He is great at everything he does, but he can't maintain contact with his wife, he is a great karateka, but he cries all the time because of a broken heart. Over the past month, the drunken crying scenes from this series have already become iconic and will go down in K-drama history. I agree with several people who say that his character here does not abstract much from his previous roles - indeed, many of the behaviors from indeed, many of the behaviors from It's Ok Not To Be Ok were continued here. Meanwhile, the character of Hong Hae In, played by Kim Ji-won, was something new to me. My last drama with her was terrible so it was nice to see her growth. The chemistry between the characters wasn't obvious but it was well played. They're not Colin and Penelope from Bridgerton, but it was good 😉

Park Sung-hoon's character, Cha Jae-wook, is a one-dimensional villain, portrayed as a ruthless and cunning businessman with no redeeming qualities. While his acting performance is settled and convincing, the character feels like a caricature, with no nuance or complexity.

Kwak Dong Yeon's current character is similar to his previous role in Vincenzo. He plays a lovable but clueless person again. He does a great job of making us feel happy and sad at the same time. His character shows how hard it is to prove yourself in a rich family, where no matter how hard you try, you always feel like you're not good enough. Director Kim Hee-woon knows how to bring out the best in Kwak Dong Yeon, so she used his character like same as in Vincenzo but bit characterization this time.

The supporting actors deliver solid performances, adding much-needed depth to their respective characters. Kwak Dong-yeon, Lee Jo-bin, Lee Mi-suk, and Na Young-hee all bring their characters to life with their performances, making them feel more fully fleshed-out than the main characters.

It has been said that "Queen of Tears” will tell the miraculous, thrilling, and humorous love story of this married couple, who manages to survive a crisis. This is the most appropriate sentence to illustrate what is happening in the entire series. The drama contains many humorous scenes, there is a miracle and a lot of goosebumps. The marriage somehow survived but they didn't come out as the same people as before. It changed a lot and not only in them. I love the balance and reletive lightness despite the constant complications in the story.
