Mask Girl

Halloween is just around a corner and I regret watching this drama before that day. 31st of October is associated with ghosts👻, monsters👺 and various masks👹, so it would be perfect for that day as Mask Girl is a Halloween level drama 💀 It raises your heart rate, makes your heart beat faster and makes you think whether sometimes you are not too sensitive about your appearance. The first 2 episodes weren't good enough but the next 5 exceeded my wildest expectations.

What are those 7 episodes about?

Kim Mo Mi is an ordinary office woman with a severe sense of inferiority in appearance. She leads a second life on the Internet, dancing and entertaining people while wearing a mask. Due to the online incident and account suspension, her alter-ego became more famous than she would like.

Her long time fan, Joo Oh Nam, coincidentally, he is also her co-worker who harbors a one-sided crush on her both versions. He gets caught up in an unexpected incident with Mo Mi that later leads to a series of unwanted actions.

While watching the first episode, I was actually close to finishing it. The comments towards Kim Mo-Mi and later her towards other people irritated me beyond measure. I know that Korea has a big problem with canons of beauty and harassment of those who are less beautiful, but here it was taken to a completely different level 😶

But I decided that I would give the second episode a chance and that's how I stayed until the very end. From this episode, the action began to develop in a very ... special? direction? Mask Girl is very intriguing drama because you have completly no idea where the story will take you. Its a star contrast to always unpredictable korean dramas although I am not sure if at this level of chills Mask Girl can be still concitered a k-drama? 😅

Many films, especially thrillers, feature the theme of low self-esteem and its impact on a person's life in society. In Mask Girl we can see how parents' dissatisfaction with their lives affects the child and how this sense of inferiority causes problems in their future 😔 I felt incredibly sorry for Mo-Mi, who was crushed by the comments from her mother and students. Especially since they were groundless because she wasn't ugly at all! But even if she was, none of them had the right to do that. Especially the mother 😠

In the drama, she is not the "monster", it is the people around her. She hid from them with a mask. Even though she did some things she should never have done, I wanted the best for her when she found another life for herself. But unfortunately the past caught up with her 😤

Short drama requires short review but I see I went too far already 😅 so let's finally get down to some details and summary.

Drama has one of better created character I saw last months. You could feel their reluctance, interest, indifference or sick fascination. I didn't recognize any of the actors from other dramas, so I watched it as a complete newbie, no bias or prejudice 😊 so refreshing! From the level of acting and the gray background of the whole story, I can easily compare the drama to brutality of Bloodhounds and The Glory and intrigue of Reborn RichSeven episodes were enough to create something truly fantastic. Maybe the first 2 episodes weren't that good, but they gave a good enough start to the whole story. They worked a bit like the proverbial "crouching tiger, hidden dragon."

Such productions are the best, that's why Mask Girl cannot get lower than 8/10 from me. The drama may be sick and slightly crazy, but the way the actors play in it and the whole story is created is simply brilliant.
