Why k-drama is so addictive?

I have already mentioned it many times in my reviews.... I really had never expected to fall so hard on certain movie type like I did for k-dramas. I know, there are multiple types within it but still, never ever expected that.

People say "it's all about the timing". Maybe indeed it was. I started this journey during corona-virus times in 2020 after I finished all American and Spanish serieses I found interesting on Netfilx. I found on the internet sentance "being eaten up or swallowed by the system. If before this phrase was typically used in politics, today, it has taken on a whole new meaning; people have been using it to refer to passion for Koreanovelas or K-Dramas." and it perfectly describes what happened to me! 😆😅 Despite the language differance I cannot stop watching it. One drama after another. Let's analyse what exactly makes it so irresistible ?!

  1. Cast members a.k.a. gorgeous Koreans. Who did not feel in love with kdrama main character throw the first stone! In my opinion it is impossible not to do it. They are just abnormally beautiful 😍😱 Once I had to dig in and find how is that possible. So, aparently Koreans are known for being crazy about their appearance 💅💆💇- the poreless and porcelain skin, no fat in their body, healthy food, exercising and tones of lotions and serums. That explains! They work hard  for us, the viewers, so we can enjoy the serie even more 🙈😆 Seeing two beautiful actors share sweet moments is what draws us oldies and newbied into K-Drama-world, and also is one of the reasons that makes us stay for more, more and more 😅

  2. The time and place. Korean dramas, also Chinese ones, are not only entertaining with their plot but also somewhat informative. Alright, the story lines itself should be taken with a grain of salt, but with cultural behaviours they are not so far from the truth. The historical dramas provide at least a glimpse of how life could look like in Joseon time (The Sword and the Brocade and 100 days my prince) or how perhaps is it to live in North Korea -  Crash Landing on You and The King - 2 hearts. Apart from accuracy of time, k- and c-dramas are known for their location and clothing perfection 💃👮 The staff behind these shows are unearty at their job. Remarkable clothes, impressive mansions and splendid outdoor locations. A FRAST FOR THE EYES!

  3. The format. Westeners are used to series what has 2, 3, 4 and more 😵 seasons with 40 episodes each. K-Dramas are different kind of story presentation as typically they have between 16-to 20 episodes with lenght of 40 to 60 minutes WITH ONLY ONE SEASON. At first I weirded ouy by it. Completly not used to it. But with a time I started to apreciate it. It allows to sink into the character because they are from the begining well stablished, we jump into the the story which is building up by the characters itself but also by side narrating of secondary characters,, the plot to thickens and the conclusion to comes into life with a "boom!💥".

  4. The fashion. There something special about the way Koreans dress up. Even if the characters have poor financial background they look like taken straight out of a fashion magazines or catwalks. In the past France and Italy were the main trenssetters but Korea takes the third position with a storm. Both men and women always look good. Often (maybe even too often!😭) dramas have scenes  inside a walk-in closet filled with luxurious clothes and  accessories and what's more shocking even the males closets are so organised. Seeing my husbands wardrobe i am really questioning is Asian roots 🙈 It might not be the main reason to become k-drama fan but it definately draws the attention.

  5. The storylines 👌 We all know that K-dramas as its own type of show, it has a very specific form of story depiction, and despite the fact that certain behaviors and scenes are repetitive, the characters, their stories, and backgrounds are unique to each series. K-Dramas are filled with creativity and brilliant twists. Americans and Europeans should learn. The mysterious creatures, characters or places always make the show interesting. Sometimes the story is so complicated that people create the "relation map" to know who is related to who" or/and "what happened to whom". There is is multible types of K-Dramas on the market: melodramas, historical, fantasy, sci-fi, action, romance, comedy, suspense. There's something for everyone while my favourite are historical, fantasy and rom-coms 💖

  6. The predictable but still exciting plotlines. As just mentioned above - there are certain behaviors and scenes that happen in many serieses and for some reasons they don't destroy the excitement to see what's going to happen! We all know that in the rom-com they will be together at the end,👄 in episode 8 and temporarly break up in about episone 12. The rich man falls in love with the poor woman, and the man’s family happens to not like the woman. The love triangles, squares or other octagons. A jealous ex-partner with an evil schemes, a full fletched revenge of step-mother. We all know what will happen but we still watch it, cry, laugh and cheer! Because what happens in between is magical and vary from show to show.

  7. The food that you want to order right now and eat it with them. I can say that without a pinch of doubt: Koreans know how to dine! Their food not only looks good but they way they enjoy it in the show, makes the viewer instantly crave for Korean barbecue, kimchi, fried chicken or tteokbokki.... and I am one of the victims who eats ramyeon while watching 🙈

  8. The romantic moments. Let's be honest many Western series are filled with passion, sex, romance, nudity .... Have you seen Elite on Netflix? If yes, you exactly know what I'm talking about 😅 if not, read at least about it 😏 Asians on the other treat love and romance scenes more cautiously. They are not taking place at the begining of serie, appearing somewhere in the mid. Drama-fans are always having something  to anticipate. The creative teams behind the shows make the kissing scenes worth the wait and everyone, literaly everyone reacts in the same way! “awww 💗💗” Often, the kissing scenes don’t even lead into more advance 😉 scenes, but when they do.... there are nice male bodies to watch ^^

  9. The topics. K-Dramas are focusing mainly on family values, friendships, maintaining romantic relationships, hardworking and being worthy in the society. Many times it's put in-betweeen magical creatures, ghosts, grim reapers, gods, fate play with previous incarnations etc. In that way stories are approachable, relatable and loved by many. What I like is that time to time you can find unique dramas that go a bit further and mention the faults in society and human nature such us gender discrimination, sexual harrasement, sick power of corporations, age gap issuemiscarriage, family abusedivorce and fatal sicknesses. The topic might be the main focus or just in the background but these dramas will stay with me forever 😭💙

  10. The pairs. What drama directors do best is the pairing of the leads. Each show has different cast, oppas, ajummas, ajussis and nonnas are changing from show to show. That gives great freshness to the sector and allows to pick your favourites. What I love about this system is that you can find new interesting dramas with person you liked and he/she will be always different to previous role.
P.S. Look forward to easter eggs like in What's wrong with secretary Kim and Because this is my first life 😊😉 I won't tell what is it but if you liked the shows as much as I did, you will be pleasantly surprised by it!

Oh wow! This is a loooooong as post. Sorry! I'm done now with my analysis. These are my reasons why I felt for K-dramas and C-dramas. All in all they are not so different from each other, right? What are you views on that? 😏 Let me know!
